Breakfast Club: Week One

I am starting my seventh season with the Breakfast Club and looking back, I was just starting to play in year one. I thought I should learn how to do things the right way before I picked up too many bad habits learning on my own. I didn’t play as a kid so I had a lot of ground to make up. So obviously, I’m a believer in the system because it works.

Week one is always fun as you see a lot of guys returning from previous seasons. You do build up camaraderie with the other players as we all have similar goals; we love the game, we want to improve our own game and we all want to have FUN doing it. When you leave the rink, even if you didn’t have your ‘A’ game, you’re already looking forward to next week. How else do you explain a bunch of players getting together on the ice at 6:00 a.m. every week?

The instructors know the game, played the game at the pro level and, most importantly, know how to teach the game. They quickly assess the skill level for each player and know how to push your buttons to get you to the next level. You’ll improve on things that you’re good at but the key is you’re going to work and improve on your weaknesses. I think this is what makes you the better player, as you don’t work on these things normally during a league or drop-in game.

Week one of the Breakfast Club started with focusing on forward skating stride and puck handling. Everyone can use more power in their skating and to be more efficient to conserve energy. Conserving energy is a motivator to us senior guys. As for puck control, soft fluid hand movements are the right way, not Frankenstein hands. I’m still a few years away from the ESPN highlight reel. Anyways, it’s okay to have a little on-ice humor; it makes the learning aspect easier, I think. Busting on your teammates for destroying a drill and dishing out a little harassment to the instructors, especially Lyle, is all part of an enjoyable morning on the ice. It’s a great way to start the day.
