Breakfast Club - Summer Update
So, what have YOU been doing while the Pistons fight the Bulls, the Red Wings fight the Ducks and the Tigers ebb and flow after last year's amazing run to the World Series?
Me … why I've been doing a lot, including still playing hockey.
I picked up indoor soccer (or as "Meine Kollegen" would say, "fütbol") and I am now gearing up for my first-ever time playing outdoor soccer. I'm coaching my kids' soccer and hockey teams. I'm playing both C and D league hockey during the week. And yes, oh yes, I am most definitely still clubbing it for breakfast. Work? Eat? Sleep? Yeah, yeah, yeah, that stuff too.
Why so much, you might ask? How can you not, I ask in return?
We've all got families and day jobs, so there's always a reason (or excuse). Just ask yourself (better yet, ask your friends and family) this: are you more fun to be around when you are, or when you are not, making that extra effort to stay involved in the things that you really enjoy? Do you take life more in stride when you stay committed to doing what you love doing? Are you that much more enthusiastic when you've expanded your horizons and tried something new that you now find you also love to do?
Even though the fitness center overlooking the rink actually occasionally does have a scout or two watching us while we skate, none of us Breakfast Clubbers will ever see a paycheck for hockey unless we take to driving a Zamboni. But doggone it, we all make the effort to be there every Wednesday morning anyway. Why? Because we love it. We show every week, we have fun, and we try to leave later that morning as a little bit better hockey player than when we came in. We assume likewise that our fellow (and sister!) Clubbers are doing the same. We cheer the good plays, we pretend like we didn't see the flub-ups, we skate our posterior off while on the ice, and we keep on doing it until the buzzer goes off.
If you haven't been to the rink lately, then you haven't seen the posters touting the completely revamped kids' leagues. The Suburban folks have made a dedicated choice to restructure the boys' program and to put the most serious muscle I've ever seen into their girls' program. All of us Breakfast Clubbers play hockey because we love it, and the way adult amateur hockey is structured we can keep playing forever without ever having to leave our friends. And now, because of Suburban's efforts, your kids can have that same opportunity. If you have a son who's thinking about trying out hockey, but who thinks it's too late for him to start because he didn't come out of the womb wearing CCM, bring him on over! And don't forget your daughter!! Did you know the girls' spring league has eight teams? And this is just spring house; we're not even talking about the regular-season girls-only learn-to-play, plus house league, plus travel teams? Speaking as someone who didn't start skating until she turned FORTY, having a place where a beginner can feel safe, where you can make new friends and keep them for years, and where you always have a place to call 'home' even as your skills advance -- now that's what I call love of the game!
Skate on, dear friends, and see you on the ice. Keep your head up, and your eyes on the goal.
